So to finish the story - Jay, Rhapsodie and I decided to meet over Memorial Day week end. They had never seen Rhapsodie Falls and Harry and I were eager to finally see Dismal Falls. Joann decided to go back with us also. We got to the parking area 1st, then Jay and Rhapsodie pulled up soon afterwards. Then to my surprise, Bruce from Pennsylvania pulled up! He had emailed me a few weeks earlier about the site and said he was going to be in the area at the same time. He just happened to stay at the same campground as Jay & Rhapsodie. They got to talking about waterfalls and voila!
We took the same trail to upper Rhapsodie and the falls were even more beautiful than the winter trip. We hung around a while, then headed back to Jim's tape trail to Dismal. These guys did a great job, but if you decide to attempt it, be warned - there are several very steep places. The trail heads up, then dangerously down towards Dismal Creek. Jim Bob Tinsley's book calls this 'one of the most foreboding places in the Southern Appalachian Mountains'. People have died in here and if you get hurt, it will be hours before help can get to you. We hung around the base of this magnificent falls (next shot) for a while and decided to head back the same way we came.
There are lower falls on Dismal Creek and we'll have to come back on a drier day to explore some more. Here's a few more shots at Rhopsodie Falls from the last 2 trips.
