base of High Falls
11-14-15 DuPont State Recreational Forest is a beautiful 10,000+ acre tract of land between Brevard and Hendersonville. There are 6 listed waterfalls and miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Fishing and hunting are allowed also - hunting is by permit only and is restricted to areas outside the hunting safety zones which include the more popular areas. I'm only going to cover the waterfalls here. Please click here for the official DuPont website where you can find info about all the activities and more. People have died at these waterfalls, but mostly from doing things they weren't supposed to be doing. The area is kid friendly, but use common sense! Dogs must be on leashes - no exceptions! Many of these trails are used by horseback riders and they don't need free running dogs spooking their horses. This area has become very popular, so you can expect a lot of company if you go on a summer week end. Go early if you hope to get photos without people in them.
Hooker, High, Triple, and Bridal Veil Falls were all featured in the movie Last of the Mohicans. I've had several emails asking about the cave behind the waterfall - sorry, there is none. Part of that scene was shot behind the small overhang drop at the top of Bridal Veil Falls. You can get behind the falling water, but it's a small area and I'm assuming the cave scene was just a set in a warehouse in Asheville. Most recently, scenes from The Hunger Games were filmed here. In one scene, Katniss runs across Triple Falls. Do not do this! Wooden planks were laid across the falls and the actress wore wires in case she slipped. Scenes were also shot at Bridal Veil Falls and in the surrounding forest.
There are several parking areas around the forest and a variety of ways to get to them. The official site has most of the combinations listed. Click here to open that page in a separate window so you can refer to it as you look at the waterfalls listed below. Construction of a new pedestrian bridge across the Little River at the Hooker Falls parking area is now complete so you no longer have to cross the highway to access the trail to Triple and High Falls. There is also a very nice visitor center and rest rooms at the High Falls Access parking area. The visitor center has maps and friendly volunteers ready to give you directions and all the help you need to make your visit more enjoyable. Be on the lookout for a new National Geographic - DuPont State Forest trail map that is due to be released in a couple of weeks!
