Falls Creek Falls
5-26-06 - Falls Creek Falls is one of the first South Carolina waterfalls I visited. It's a beautiful 100' drop in 2 levels and is in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness area. The parking area for the trail head is very close to Jones Gap State Park. Coming from Brevard, take Hwy 276 south into South Carolina. Pass Caesars Head State Park, the parking for Raven Cliff Falls trail, and continue to a stop sign where 276 meets Hwy 11. Turn left - Hwys 276 and 11 share this stretch of road for about 6 miles. At about 1/2 mile you'll notice Wildcat Branch Falls on the left. Continue on 276/11 for about 4.5 miles and turn left at the F-Mart on to River Falls Road. After 4 miles, take Duckworth Road to the right. Jones Gap SP is straight ahead on River Falls Rd. After another 1/2 mile, take a right on Falls Creek Rd, following the signs to Palmetto Bible Camp. The small parking area is 0.4 miles up on the left.
The trail to the falls is 1.7 miles and moderately difficult and is blazed orange. It begins with a rather steep climb up an old road. Once it levels out, it follows a ridge line through the forest and crosses Little Falls Creek somewhere around the halfway point. After crossing the creek, the trail gets steep again and continues that way most of the way to the waterfall. Be sure to follow the orange blazes!
On my recent return trip to the falls, It took me about 30-40 minutes to get to the waterfall. The trail comes out at about the mid point of the waterfall. Head right and up to see the upper section.
Cables have been added to assist the descent to the lower section of the falls. I'm not sure they are really necessary, but please be careful either way. My 2 visits were both during times of below normal water flow. In higher water flow, I imagine the rocks would be soaked from spray and very slippery. The trail crosses the creek at the base of the falls and continues on to Jones Gap State Park.
