Johns Jump Falls
6-22-13 Johns Jump Falls is a fairly nice 25' waterfall - nothing spectacular, but worth a look if you are in the area. It's right next to the road on NC281, but requires a semi-steep climb down to the base to see it.
Directions: From the intersection of US64 and NC281 south in the Lake Toxaway area, turn south on 281 and drive 5 miles to the grassy area on the left. It's not an official parking area, but there's plenty of room to pull off. Just do it slowly! If you pass Whitewater Church Rd on the right, you have gone too far. The hike begins on the unmarked trail at the north end of the grassy area.
You'll hear the waterfall once you get out of your vehicle. Head to the edge of the woods and you'll spot the trail. It heads down the right side of Mill Creek to the base of the falls. It's steep, but there are rhododendron to hold on to on your way down. If you are a fairly mobile person, you shouldn't have any problems getting down. The trail comes out to the view of the falls in the picture below. If you want an open frontal shot, you'll either have to make your way through the shrub, or just wade the creek over to the rocks where I took the shot above from.
