waterfall on Looking Glass Creek

10-17-14 - Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock are the 2 main waterfalls on Looking Glass Creek, but there are several smaller ones also that most people just drive right by. All are right next to the road, but require scrambling down a steep path to get a decent shot. You should at least stop and take a look - especially if you are looking for photo ops. If you are heading north on 276, they are all on the left side of the road. For safety sake, I'll give you directions to the farthest one first and you can make your way back down to the others without having to cross lanes to park.

Directions:  From the intersection of NC 280 / US64 / US276 near Brevard, drive 10.0 miles up US276 north and look for a small paved pull off on the left. Pull in if you like, but if you are planning to go back down to the other ones, drive 1/10th of a mile farther and turn around at FR475B which will be on your left. If you happen to be coming from Log Hollow on FR475B, come to the stop sign at 276, turn right and park in the pull off on the right less than 0.1 miles down. There's only room for maybe 2 cars, so you don't have to worry about crowds. You'll hear the waterfall when you get out of your vehicle - walk down the road for a short distance to find the best way to scramble down to the base. The falls is about 20' high and is shown in the photo above and below.

From this pull off area, drive south on 276 for 1.8 miles and look for a pull off on the right with a picnic table. There are 3 small waterfalls at this stop. These require a bit more of a steep scramble to get to creek level and the middle one will require wading through the creek to get the shot I did. I shot the 3rd one from the top because I didn't see a safe way to get to the base.

From the last pull off, drive about a mile south and look for a series of pull offs on the right a short distance down from Sliding Rock. Park in any of these pull offs and the last set of waterfalls/cascades are in here. (This is 7.1 miles from the 280/64/276 intersection if you are heading north and want to start here.) The scramble down to the first falls isn't too bad - the second one is a little steeper.
