2-11-07 Thank you for all the emails asking why I didn't have Moravian Falls on my site. This was actually one of the first waterfalls I visited before I started the web site, but I have no idea what happened to the files and I hadn't been back since. Friends of mine are building a house up in Sparta, NC. I paid a visit this week end and saw that Moravian Falls was a short detour from Hwy 18, so I stopped by on my way home to Asheville.
Directions: Get yourself to Wilkesboro. From the Triad/Triangle area of NC, take I-40 to Winston-Salem, then Hwy 421 north to Wilkesboro. From Boone - Hwy 421 south to Wilkesboro. If you come up or down 421, get on Hwys 18/16 south in Wilkesboro and go about 3 miles before turning right at the sign for Moravian Falls. This will be Hwy 18 to Lenoir and Morganton. Drive less than 1/2 a mile and turn left on Falls Rd. The waterfall is about 1/2 mile down on the left. It's on private property at the Moravian Falls Campground. The facilities are closed in the winter - we parked on the right at the store and walked across the street. If the campground is open, please stop in the store and ask permission before seeing the waterfall. From west of Morganton, take I-40 east to exit 103 and take Hwy 64 east around Morganton to Hwy 18 north. Falls Road will be on the right 1/2 a mile before you get to Hwy 16.
The waterfall is about 40' high and water levels were a little low on my visit. The mill and water wheel are not working, but the scene is nice. I'll be back later this year when it greens up and I head back up to Sparta and Stone Mountain State Park.
