Lower Rockhouse Creek Falls
Lower Rockhouse Creek Falls

10-15-14  There are 3 waterfalls on Rockhouse Creek, but only 2 are worth stopping for. The waterfall above is viewable roadside, but also has a short trail down from the road for a closer look. Another is kind of viewable from a forest road, but requires a steeper climb down a narrow path to get a better view. The last one you can hear from the same forest road, but is covered in shrub and not worth stopping for.

Directions:  From the intersection of NC 280 / US64 / US276 near Brevard, drive 5.2 miles north on 276 and turn left on the paved FR475 towards the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Research. Drive 2.1 miles and pull off the road right before ot crosses Rockhouse Creek. There's only enough room for 1 or 2 vehicles here. The waterfall is on the right and you could easily pass it if you have your nose stuck in your phone. A short easy trail leads down to the base of the falls where there's a small pool for taking a dip.

This waterfall isn't very big and may be not much more than a trickle in drier weather. The shot above was taken in October 2014 when creek levels were very high. The picture below was also taken during higher water flow.

Middle Rockhouse Creek Falls is off of FR475B - the same road you would take to see Slick Rock Falls and the waterfalls near Log Hollow. From the lower waterfall above, drive 1/2 mile back towards the Pisgah Center and turn left on the gravel FR475B. Drive 1.5 miles up this road and the waterfall will be down on the left at a camp site that was closed. The only problem is trying to find a wide, safe place to pull off. You may have to park down the road a bit and walk back. Look for the very steep path that leads down into the site. This waterfall is less than 10' tall, but nice in the right conditions. Upper Rockhouse Creek Falls is about 1/2 a mile up FR475 from this point. You might catch a glimpse of it through the shrub or hear it if you have your window rolled down.
